The Main Attractions

Cape Kamui is one of the most iconic spots on the Shakotan Peninsula. A narrow path called “Charenka’s Path” stretches 770 meters out to the tip of the cape, offering panoramic views of the Sea of Japan and the dramatic cliffs. The walk takes about 20 minutes one-way and includes some steep sections, but the stunning scenery makes it worthwhile. Cape Kamui is a 1 hour and 40-minute bus ride from Otaru Station.

Shimamui Coast is considered one of Japan’s most beautiful coastlines. A short tunnel leads from the parking area to an observation deck overlooking the turquoise waters and jagged rocks below. The clarity of the water is exceptional, allowing you to see the ocean floor from above. Shimamui Coast is a 10-minute drive from Cape Kamui.

Cape Shakotan offers another opportunity to experience the peninsula’s natural beauty. A gentle walking trail leads to the tip of the cape, where you can enjoy views of the surrounding sea and cliffs. Nearby is the Shakotan Misaki Lighthouse and the Shakotan Cape Park, which provide additional viewpoints. Cape Shakotan is a 30-minute drive from Cape Kamui.

Diving and Snorkeling are popular activities during the summer months, taking advantage of the clear waters and abundant marine life. The Shakotan Underwater Park is a designated marine conservation area, ideal for underwater exploration. Several local operators offer equipment rental and guided tours.

Local Seafood is a highlight of visiting the Shakotan Peninsula. The area is famous for its fresh sea urchin (uni), especially from June to August. Many local restaurants serve uni-don (sea urchin rice bowls) and other seafood delicacies. The roadside station “Shakotan Gourmet” is a great place to sample these dishes.

Hiking Trails are available throughout the peninsula, offering varying levels of difficulty. Trails provide access to scenic viewpoints, coastal landscapes, and opportunities to observe local flora and fauna unique to the region.
