Sato Fisheries Sapporo Main Store (Sato Suisan Honten)

Located directly across from JR Sapporo Station’s South Exit, Sato Fisheries Sapporo Main Store is a kind of seafood wonderland with two sales floors of diverse marine products. Sato Fisheries is a well-known company in Hokkaido that produces and sells both fresh and processed seafood products. At the Main Store you can find an incredible range of fish and shellfish such as scallops, crab, shrimp, squid, saury, and herring; a variety of seasoned fish eggs such as ikura (salmon roe), mentaiko (pollock roe), tarako (cod roe) and kazunoko (herring roe); as well as canned goods, sauces, seasonings, and products made with konbu kelp (a type of edible seaweed).

Sato Fisheries is particularly famous for its Hokkaido salmon products which are sold fresh, frozen, cooked, or preserved using a variety of traditional methods: drying, salting, smoking, pickling, and fermenting. Sato Fisheries also process salmon meat into a variety of original products such as rolls, sausages, and pate. For a tasty snack try the “Sakeppi”: deep-fried chips made from salmon skin and flavored with mayonnaise. Apparently salmon skin is rich in vitamin B1 and collagen, so these chips are a healthy treat too! Sakeppi chips are an original Sato Fisheries product that can only be bought in one of their stores and they are not available online.

Many of the items available at Sato Fisheries Main Store have free samples available so you can taste the products before you decide to buy them. Gift sets are available that can be wrapped in decorative wrapping paper and presented with a message card. If you buy fresh fish, the staff can supply you with ice packs to keep it fresh during your journey home. This store also has a shipping counter that can send your purchases anywhere in Japan.

Onigiri rice balls and bento lunch boxes can also be reserved online and picked up at this store. For full details of the rice ball and bento service, please see the dedicated web page (Japanese language only).

Sato Fisheries also have branches by Sapporo Central Wholesale Market (in the Curb Market), in the basements of both the Mitsukoshi and Marui Imai Odori department stores (both near Odori Subway Station), and in New Chitose Airport.
